How to serve divorce papers through social media

If you want to get divorced in the state of Texas, you must first serve marriage dissolution papers to your spouse. However, this may be difficult to do if this person doesn’t want to be found. Fortunately, it may be possible to deliver divorce documents to your partner through social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.

You’ll need court approval to serve papers through social media

In most cases, you’ll need to make an effort to serve divorce papers in a traditional manner before seeking the ability to do so online. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need to convince a judge that serving papers through a social media site is the best alternative method available. Otherwise, whoever is overseeing your case may require you to accomplish this task by mail or other physical means.

You can use social media to showcase your efforts to serve divorce papers

Even if you can’t serve papers through a social media platform, it may be possible to use this tool to verify where your partner lives. A judge may allow you to submit papers to an address listed on your spouse’s Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account. Your divorce attorney may also be able to use information found online to determine where this person could be located.

An inability to locate your spouse doesn’t mean that you cannot get a divorce. However, it does mean that the process of ending your marriage may take longer than you would like. It’s possible that your partner might have several months to accept and reply to your petition to dissolve your marriage. At some point, a failure to respond to your petition could result in a default judgment entered in your favor.
